Melbourne Renegades are an Australian men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Based in Melbourne in the state of Victoria, the Renegades wear a red and black uniform. The team plays most of their matches at their home ground, Docklands Stadium (currently known as Marvel Stadium for sponsorship reasons), although Geelong’s Kardinia Park (or GMHBA Stadium) has also been used for home matches.
The Renegades were formed in 2011 to play in the Big Bash League after Cricket Australia (CA) decided they would place two teams in Melbourne with the core group of players for both sides succeeding the Victorian Bushrangers, who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition. The rivalry between the Renegades and the Melbourne Stars automatically became widely anticipated in Melbourne and quickly became hugely popular with big crowds flocking in to the derby matches.
On January 2, 2016, a derby match between the Renegades and Stars drew a record crowd of 80,883. This is the highest ever crowd for any domestic cricket match in the history of the sport. The Renegades defeated the Stars to win their maiden BBL title on February 17, 2019 by 13 runs. As of January 10, 2020, the Renegades trail the Stars 5-13 from all 18 derby matches.
