Melbourne Stars are an Australian men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Based in Melbourne in the state of Victoria, the Stars wear a dark green and black uniform and play most of their matches at their home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The Stars were formed in 2011 to play in the Big Bash League after Cricket Australia (CA) decided they would place two teams in Melbourne with the core group of players for both sides succeeding the Victorian Bushrangers, who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition. The rivalry between the Stars and the Melbourne Renegades automatically became widely anticipated in Melbourne and quickly became hugely popular with big crowds flocking in to the derby matches.
On January 2, 2016, a derby match between the Stars and Renegades drew a record crowd of 80,883. This is the highest ever crowd for any domestic cricket match in the history of the sport. The Stars lost to the Renegades in the 2018-19 BBL final on February 17, 2019 by 13 runs. As of January 10, 2020, the Stars lead the Renegades 13-5 from all 18 derby matches.
