Southern Rockets are an Australian men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in an independent and privatised Twenty20 cricket competition, the Brisbane Premier League (BPL). Based in Chelmer in the state of Queensland, the Rockets wear a blue and red uniform. The team plays in the Senior competition, while the Rockets also feature multiple junior age groups including U12s, U13s, U15s, U17s for males and U23s for females.
Originally known as the ‘Southern Cyclones’, the Rockets were formed in 2021 to play in the inaugural Brisbane Premier League competition. The inaugural captain was Redlands Tigers wicketkeeper Leigh Drennan. Notable players include former South Australia Redbacks players Conor McInerney and Jake Winter.
The Rockets won just one match during a disappointing inaugural season that saw them finish seventh in the 2021 Brisbane Premier League. They turned things around in 2022 and reached the semi-finals for the first time, but were beaten in that match by Coastal Marlins by 8 wickets. In 2023, the Rockets narrowly missed out on a semi-finals berth due to an inferior net run rate.
