Sydney Sixers are an Australian men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Based in Sydney in the state of New South Wales, the Sixers wear a magenta uniform. The team plays most of their matches at their home ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in the south-eastern area of the inner city.
The Sixers were formed in 2011 to play in the Big Bash League after Cricket Australia (CA) decided they would place two teams in Sydney with the core group of players for both sides succeeding the New South Wales Blues, who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition.
The rivalry between the Sixers and the Sydney Thunder automatically became widely anticipated in Sydney. The Sixers went undefeated against the Thunder across the first four seasons of the BBL, but finally lost in the opening match of the 2015-16 season. As of January 18, 2020, the Sixers lead the Thunder 11-6 from all 17 derby matches.
After finishing third in the regular season games, the Sixers went on to defeat the Perth Scorchers in the final to win the inaugural BBL tournament in 2011-12. The team backed this up by winning the subsequent 2012 Champions League T20 competition against Highveld Lions in South Africa. Furthermore, the Sixers have returned to the BBL final three times since and completed their second championship win in 2019-20, making the team the current BBL champions.
