Sydney Thunder are an Australian men’s Twenty20 franchise cricket team that competes in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL). Based in Sydney in the state of New South Wales, the Thunder wear an electric green and black uniform. The team plays most of their matches at their home ground, Sydney Showground Stadium (currently known as Spotless Stadium for sponsorship reasons), although Stadium Australia (or ANZ Stadium) hosted the team’s home matches prior to 2015.
The Thunder were formed in 2011 to play in the Big Bash League after Cricket Australia (CA) decided they would place two teams in Sydney with the core group of players for both sides succeeding the New South Wales Blues, who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition.
The rivalry between the Thunder and the Sydney Sixers automatically became widely anticipated in Sydney. The Thunder went winless against the Sixers across the first four seasons of the BBL, but finally won in the opening match of the 2015-16 season. As of January 18, 2020, the Thunder trail the Sixers 6-11 from all 17 derby matches.
